CHAPTER TWELVE

She was done. Finished. She was getting to the bottom of this now. Too much was happening, too much was at stake, and she was too raw and tired to tolerate any more bullshit.

“Okay.” Emmy stopped in the middle of the sidewalk. “I’ve had enough of this.”

Tanner stopped with her, but still held onto her hand. “What are you talking about?”

“You!” She jabbed her pointed finger against the solid plane of his wide chest. “I’ve had enough of you beating around the bush about what you do. I’ve known you long enough to know that half of the shit you’ve told me about your job doesn’t add up! And now you call someone immediately after buying a prepaid phone, talking about GTFO bags and meeting you at pizzerias like they know exactly what you’re talking about. I need you to tell me right now! Tell me, so I know what the hell I’m dealing with!”

Tanner sighed, looking around cautiously. “Come on.” He squeezed her hand and pulled her into a nearby alley. He looked around once more, she supposed, to make sure they were alone.

“Okay.” Tanner swallowed hard. “You’re right; I owe you the truth. You came to me for help; I should at least be honest with you.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “I don’t work for the State Department.”

“Yeah, I kind of figured that,” Emmy replied sarcastically.

“I work for the CIA. So does Dorin; that’s who I was talking to on the phone.”

Emmy wanted to be surprised. But somehow, she couldn’t. Deep down, she had been sure that was the case. “Are you a spy?”

Tanner shook his head. “The part about me being a Case Officer is true. That’s technically my job title. I’m a handler; I manage agents in the field. I take in intel, process it, and give them what they need to survive. Dorin was my agent up until last year. We don’t have time to go into specifics right now; but there you are. The truth.”

Emmy blinked, trying to process Tanner’s rushed explanation. “Was that so hard?”

Tanner scoffed, looking down at his feet. “No, I guess not. I wasn’t actually supposed to tell you that. We’re only supposed to disclose that we work for the CIA to spouses.”

“So, what? Do you have to kill me or something?” Emmy couldn’t stop the sardonic chuckle.

For the first time in hours, Tanner smiled wide, giving a small laugh. “I couldn’t harm a hair on your head, baby.” He took her hand again, pulling her toward the street. “Come on, we have to meet up with Dorin.”

A taxi took them to a hole-in-the-wall pizzeria that Emmy had never heard of. Tanner was on full alert as they exited the taxi and made a beeline for the front door of the restaurant. He had an iron grip on her hand as they walked in and he scanned every square inch of the room in what felt like a split second. They took a seat in a booth near the back.
